CORE EXERCISE THERAPY

One of the major keys to successful chiropractic rehabilitation is to develop a strong ‘core’. The core refers to a group of muscles located around the trunk of the body that are responsible for stabilising the spine and pelvis. These muscles are the Transverse Abdominus, Rectus Abdominus, Multifidus, Quadratus Lumborum, Internal and External Obliques.

The core musculature of your body plays a pivotal role in restoring structural stability to your spine and pelvis. The core muscles act like the support beams for a tower, creating a strong foundation around the base. They are also responsible for ‘bracing’ and controlling movements of your trunk. This is especially important when lifting, carrying, bending and performing any kind of twisting manoeuvres.

Without core muscle integrity, over time, your spine will undergo wear-and-tear from repetitive daily activities causing problems such as disc bulges, osteoarthritis, postural abnormalities and associated musculoskeletal aches and pains.

One major advantage of core muscle strength is that it provides stability to the fluid-filled discs located along the length of your spine. In the absence of this support, fluid filled discs are more inclined to bulge when exposed to the external forces of daily tasks, often resulting in severe pain and loss of spinal mobility. The core muscles intervene in this process as their attachment sites are strategically located around these joints to provide a muscular wall which successfully takes significant strain off these joints and discs.

The core muscles are also heavily involved in retraining abnormal posture by creating deep abdominal and spinal strength and support. When core muscles are activated correctly they also allow for the alignment pattern of your spine to be held long-term instead of spinal misalignments continually reoccurring due to core muscle instability.

The core exercise therapy component of the C.R.I.S program at Chiropractic One in Liverpool focuses on developing your core strength through highly specialised and research based exercise programming. We apply exercise physiology techniques such as bracing under load and intra-abdominal stabilisation in our state-of-the-art musculoskeletal rehabilitation facility. At Chiropractic One our exercise programs are specifically designed around your musculoskeletal and postural assessment scores, daily functional and physical work requirements. By mastering the core exercise element of the C.R.I.S program, you will lay a strong foundation in achieving outstanding and long term results.
